Manager says opening-day defeat just ‘one game’United to be without Carlos Baleba against IpswichMichael Carrick has said it was “lazy and easy” to say everything was wrong with Manchester United after the opening-day defeat at Hull.United lost 2-0 in a tame display and the manager was asked whether his captain, Bruno Fernandes, and Youri Tielemans, Belgium’s captain, had shown the leadership that might have affected the performance and result. Tottenham Hotspur are yet to win a game or score a goal this Premier League season, however Spurs fan should take away from the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle a renewed sense of optimism with Roberto De Zerbi now fully in charge.

Manchester United will bounce back and ‘destroy’ Ipswich, predicts Patrice Evra (Picture: Kick) Patrice Evra has backed Manchester United to rally after their opening-day defeat at Hull to ‘destroy’ Ipswich this weekend. A dramatic end-of-season resurgence under Michael Carrick had United fans feeling positive ahead of the new campaign, with the club qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2023/24. That sense of optimism quickly turned to frustration and despair, though, as Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scored a pair of unanswered goals to ensure Hull secured all three points against United on their return to the Premier League. The Red Devils ended the game with 71 per cent of the possession but could only muster a total of five shots on target, with Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo and Bruno Fernandes all denied by Konstantinos Tzolakis at MKM Stadium. Carrick’s men have the perfect opportunity to respond versus another of the league’s new boys in Ipswich on Sunday afternoon – and they will be desperate to right their wrongs after a nightmare start to the new season. Ipswich may well be tasting another upset heading into the contest after coming out on top in their two opening matches against Sunderland and Leicester in the Premier League and Carabao Cup respectively. But when asked for his prediction during a live stream on Kick, former United full-back Evra replied: ‘I think Manchester United will destroy Ipswich. Hull stunned United with a 2-0 victory on their Premier League return (Picture: Getty) Carrick cut a frustrated figure on the touchline at MKM Stadium (Picture: Getty) ‘But I think they’re going to suffer in the first half, then they are going to beat Ipswich 3-1. ‘I don’t see United losing this second game but also it’s a really tricky and dangerous game so I’m not going arrogant. ‘When I say they have to win 3-1 it’s because if we even draw, imagine the noise.’ {"@context":"https:\/\/schema.org","@type":"VideoObject","name":"Carrick reflects on disappointing start as Man United lose to Hull","contentUrl":"https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2026\/08\/22\/3200761093652133798\/480x270_MP4_3200761093652133798.mp4","description":"Press conference with Manchester United manager Michael Carrick following their 2-0 loss to Hull City at the MKM Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday.","duration":"T6M44S","height":270,"thumbnailUrl":"https:\/\/i.dailymail.com\/1s\/2026\/08\/22\/16\/110791853-0-image-m-13_1787413415956.jpg","uploadDate":"2026-08-22T16:42:41+0100","width":480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page window.addEventListener('metroVideo:relatedVideosCarouselLoaded', function(data) { if (typeof(data.detail) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel.el_) === 'undefined') { return; } var player = data.detail.carousel.el_; var container = player.closest('.metro-video-player'); var placeholder = container.querySelector('.metro-video-player__up-next-placeholder'); if (placeholder) { container.removeChild(placeholder); container.classList.add('metro-video-player--related-videos-loaded'); } }); According to Evra, the amount of ‘noise’ when United win or lose just goes to show that the Red Devils remain a ‘big club’. ‘That’s when you know it’s still a big club, when United lose it’s like all the world is just talking about it,’ he added. ‘When they win, when they lose, it’s the same. Even people forget about the other results. Evra is considered one of the finest left-backs in Premier League history (Picture: Getty) ‘Some other teams, I don’t understand why we don’t talk about Brighton, their performance, we talk about United because we lost against Hull. ‘They are against the world. It has to be a win. If we don’
Savio enjoyed his Tottenham debut on Wednesday night (Picture: Getty Images) Roberto De Zerbi has challenged new Tottenham signing Savio to score far more goals than he did at Manchester City, setting the winger a specific target. The 22-year-old has made the move to north London this summer in a deal worth an initial £75million and made his debut on Wednesday night. It went very well for the Brazil international as he came off the bench to score a goal and provide an assist in a 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Charlton. In his two seasons at Manchester City the Brazilian was largely a bit part player, making 84 appearances but many of those coming as a substitute. In those 84 outings he scored just seven goals, netting just twice in 53 Premier League appearances. De Zerbi wants a lot more end product out of the winger and has set him the task of scoring at least 10 goals this season for Spurs. Savio did hit those heights during his loan spell at Girona in 2023/24 when he scored 11 times in all competitions and nine in La Liga. That is the level De Zerbi wants to see him reach again. Roberto De Zerbi has high hopes for the Brazil international (Picture: Getty Images) ‘It was a perfect day for him,’ De Zerbi said of his new signing after the Charlton win. ‘I think his biggest step and biggest improvement is to increase the number of goals. ‘With his qualities, he is one of the best wingers. But the best wingers score many goals. ‘I spoke with him yesterday, two days ago. We put the goal on 10 to 12 goals because we need those goals from the wingers. ‘Last season, I think we suffered too much. Also, because the number of goals were not enough to compete for nothing more than that position.’ Savio celebrates with another big-money summer signing Mateus Fernandes (Picture: Reuters) De Zerbi also had high praise for another summer signing, Mateus Fernandes, who he feels can be a star in two positions in his midfield. ‘Mateus Fernandes is another talent, big talent,’ said the Italian. ‘We are lucky because he can cover two positions on the pitch, like as a pivot or number 10. ‘Anyway, he brings quality, he is dynamic and he fights on the pitch, because I think in the last season he was one of the best players in terms of regaining the ball, in the duel. ‘He is important, like [Conor] Gallagher, because we can’t forget Gallagher. I think today Rodrigo Betancur played very well. I think now he is very important for us. ‘Unfortunately, he started the season later than the other players, but when Rodrigo Betancur is fit, he is available, he is in the right physical condition, he is a different player. Because his understanding is great, he is a different player.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source
Youri Tielemans made his Manchester United debut against Hull on Saturday (Picture: Getty Images) Aston Villa captain John McGinn admits Youri Tielemans leaving for Manchester United will be a ‘big loss’ as he reveals the unseen brilliance the Belgian brings. The 29-year-old swapped Villa Park for Old Trafford this summer, with the Red Devils signing the midfielder for a reported £35 million. Tielemans makes the move after three seasons at Villa which saw him play 134 times across all competitions, scoring 10 goals. McGinn is full of praise for the Belgium international, who he says brings a huge amount to a club off the field as well as on it. Sign up now for free. ‘He’s going to be a big loss for us,’ the Scotland star said on Stick to Football. ‘Unbelievable professional. Work rate, quality. ‘Just a good teammate and all-round good guy, but he’s got quality as well. He can find a pass, he can score a brilliant goal. I’m talking about the complete player here. ‘I saw Jonny Evans talk about him a couple of weeks ago in the media and he said he’s probably what United have been missing. We’re going to lose him on and off the pitch, he’s a top player and so determined to win. Tielemans signed off at Aston Villa by winning the Europa League (Picture: Getty Images) ‘That’s the one thing that I’ll maybe miss from a lot of the players [who have left Aston Villa this summer], the mentality when the going’s getting tough. I’ve got no doubts that Youri at United, he’ll deliver that, definitely.’ McGinn says he had a totally wrong impression of the Belgian when he signed for Villa from Leicester in 2023, thinking he was out of shape at the time. The reality was quite the opposite and Tielemans is an example for the rest of the squad in terms of professionalism. John McGinn is not sugar-coating the loss of Tielemans for Aston Villa (Picture: Getty Images) Asked if Tielemans is a leader, McGinn said: ‘100 per cent. Talking, standards, he’s not got a flaw off the pitch. ‘I tried to find it. I tried to get him to have a can of Coke after the game or eat a cookie on the plane or something, but he’s so driven he just does everything right, to the letter. ‘You always find him in the gym. When he signed, I thought good player, [but] slow and unfit, looked a bit fat. That’s what I thought. Then he took his top off and I’m like, woah, maybe not. Tielemans faces stiff competition for a place in Manchester United’s midfield (Picture: PA Wire) ‘That myth, I think he’ll always have that with his body shape, but it’s wrong. He’s not going to burst away from you with speed, but that’s not his game. He’s fit as a fiddle and was really reliable for us. ‘He’s not afraid to get people’s standards up, if you’re not playing at his standards in training or his level, he’ll let you know.’ Tielemans started with Andrey Santos and Bruno Fernandes in United’s midfield in the shock 2-0 loss at Hull City on Saturday. Kobbie Mainoo came off the bench and the Red Devils have since added Carlos Baleba to their squad in a significant midfield revamp over the summer. Michael Carrick’s side is back in action on Sunday when they take on another newly-promoted team in Ipswich Town.
