Mikel Arteta has described Gabriel Martinelli as a ‘critical player’ for Arsenal (PA Wire) Mikel Arteta insists Gabriel Martinelli has been a ‘critical player’ for Arsenal following his move to Al-Hilal. Martinelli joined Arsenal at the age of 18 and went on to score 62 goals in 278 appearances for the Gunners. Martinelli is closing in on a move away from Arsenal after being told to find a new club by Gunners boss Arteta. Having made his first-team debut in 2019, Martinelli is Arsenal’s longest-serving player and has racked up just shy of 300 appearances for the club. Martinelli began to fade out of Arteta’s plans last season but still contributed to Arsenal’s first Premier League title since 2004 and the run to the Champions League final. The writing appeared to be on the wall for Martinelli when Arsenal completed a £34m deal for Christos Tzolis earlier in the summer. The audacious yet unsuccessful pursuit of Brazil icon Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid also suggested Arteta was planning to offload Martinelli. Arteta made his stance on Martinelli clear by leaving the 25-year-old out of Arsenal’s matchday squad for the Community Shield against Manchester City. So, they [Arsenal] may be looking at that and there may be somebody else in the window that they need the money for from Gabriel Martinelli. ‘They can’t allow his contract to run out. Business has to be done, and everyone has to accept that. ‘He will know exactly his position at the football club, that’s without a doubt. If he does go, it’s with a heavy heart that he goes because he’s a player that I’ve admired in the way that he’s played. It’s worked really quickly, very well. ‘He’s exceeded expectations and it’s almost as if they’ve scoured Europe to find the equivalent of Leandro Trossard, that same sort of intelligence. This lad is maybe a bit quicker. ‘It’s a major upgrade on where he was at Norwich before. He’s certainly performed a lot better than he did the last time he would have been at the Emirates.
