Manchester United should have explored a transfer move for Unai Simon, says Rene Meulensteen (Picture: No Tippy Tappy Football) Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen says the club should have made a move for Athletic Bilbao and Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon in the summer transfer window. The Red Devils replaced the error-prone Andre Onana by signing Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth in the region of £18million last summer. The 24-year-old would go on to enjoy a promising debut season at Old Trafford, winning United fans over with a series of impressive performances across his opening 33 appearances. However, it has proven a tricky start to the new campaign for Lammens, with Michael Carrick’s side picking up just four points from their first three matches in the Premier League and conceding six goals in the process. At the weekend, Lammens was met with criticism after Tyrique George beat the Belgian at his near post as Everton cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s opener at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Lammens could do nothing about the Toffees’ second equaliser, though, with substitute Ainsley Maitland-Niles curling home a superb strike from 25 yards to make it 2-2 at the death. ‘Don’t get me wrong, he had a really good season, he made some remarkable saves and he helped United a lot,’ Meulensteen said of Lammens on the latest edition of the Footy Accumulators No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, in partnership with BOYLE Sports. No. Can he get there? Not sure. ‘I doubt it because I always do my due diligence on things and one of the things I felt with him, he’s still young, but obviously what happened with him at the World Cup is something I identified in him. ‘I think really critical people will probably look at him with the first goal against Everton, near post. ‘For me, if you talk about strengthening, you talk about the two most important people on the pitch: the goalkeeper and the striker. If one can sort goals out and the other can make sure he keeps clean sheets, you’ve got a good chance of winning.’ {"@context":"https:\/\/schema.org","@type":"VideoObject","name":"Carrick insists Man Utd's start to season is 'not that bad' after 2-2 draw to Everton","contentUrl":"https:\/\/videos.metro.co.uk\/video\/met\/2026\/09\/07\/6380575265597538231\/480x270_MP4_6380575265597538231.mp4","description":"Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored an absolute worldie in the sixth minute of added time to seal a 2-2 draw for The Toffees.","duration":"T4M8S","height":270,"thumbnailUrl":"https:\/\/i.dailymail.com\/1s\/2026\/09\/07\/07\/111091361-0-image-a-43_1788761956815.jpg","uploadDate":"2026-09-07T07:17:25+0100","width":480} To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page window.addEventListener('metroVideo:relatedVideosCarouselLoaded', function(data) { if (typeof(data.detail) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel) === 'undefined' || typeof(data.detail.carousel.el_) === 'undefined') { return; } var player = data.detail.carousel.el_; var container = player.closest('.metro-video-player'); var placeholder = container.querySelector('.metro-video-player__up-next-placeholder'); if (placeholder) { container.removeChild(placeholder); container.classList.add('metro-video-player--related-videos-loaded'); } }); Having paid close attention to Simon’s performances for Spain at the World Cup, Meulensteen believes United may have missed a trick not trying to sign the shot-stopper from Athletic Bilbao. ‘I thought it would have been a really good bet to get him, I would ha

Savio scored and assisted on his Tottenham debut (Photo: Getty) Roberto De Zerbi has revealed why Tottenham signing Savio missed Saturday’s Premier League match against Newcastle United. Spurs hosted the Magpies in the evening kick-off, with Omar Marmoush starting up front just days after completing his loan transfer from Manchester City. He is the second forward to arrive from the Etihad in the last week, after the north Londoners signed Savio in a deal worth up to a staggering £85million. Many have questioned the signing given the winger did not have a great impact at City under Pep Guardiola, but he enjoyed a perfect debut in the Carabao Cup win over Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night. The Brazilian came off the bench to score and assist in a 5-1 win and was fully expected to be involved in some capacity on Saturday. But when the line-ups were announced, Savio’s name was nowhere to be seen, with De Zerbi revealing he has sustained an injury set-back. ‘There was bad news yesterday, before training in the afternoon,’ the Italian head coach told Sky Sports shortly before kick-off. Omar Marmoush made his Tottenham debut against Newcastle (Photo: Getty) ‘He [Savio] suffered muscle fatigue and the medical staff obviously didn’t want to take a risk. I agree with them. ‘It’s not the right moment [to play], especially because he didn’t work in the last 10 days. 20 minutes against Charlton, was tough to rest for the days after. ‘But for the next game, I think there will be no problem.’ Tottenham travel to Nottingham Forest, who earned a 2-2 draw at Liverpool earlier, for their next Premier League match next Saturday. Spurs’ treatment room is filling up already, with James Maddison and Pape Matar Sarr sidelined, while Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Dejan Kulusevski remain long-term absentees. Tottenham’s Pedro Porro won the World Cup with Spain over the summer (Photo: Getty) Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that new Tottenham captain Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro will miss the opening Premier League match against Brentford. Spurs travel across London on Saturday evening, with De Zerbi aiming to get his side back to the top-end of the Premier League after back-to-back 17th place finishes. In order to do so, the Italian has spent big this summer, signing the likes of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke and Andy Robertson. Additionally, Tottenham now have a World Cup winner in their squad in Porro, who was outstanding for Spain throughout the tournament. But the right-back will not play this weekend, with Spurs dealt several injury blows on the eve of the new season. ‘Micky is not on the list tomorrow like Pedro Porro,’ De Zerbi said in his pre-match press conference, shortly after announcing the pair were the new Tottenham captain and vice-captain. ‘James Maddison is inside [the list], Dominic Solanke inside, [Destiny] Udogie inside, Mateus Fernandes inside. New Spurs skipper Micky van de Ven has been plagued by injury issues (Photo: Getty) ‘Pape Matar Sarr is not because he felt some pain, hamstring I think. Nothing important but we don’t take risks especially in this moment. [Mohammed] Kudus is almost ready.’ It is not clear whether Porro is injured or just having extra time to recover after returning late to training following his World Cup heroics. Young midfielder Archie Gray will likely fill-in for the 26-year-old, who is the only natural right-back at the club after England star Djed Spence was sold to Inter Milan. Roberto De Zerbi’s team play Brentford away on Saturday evening (Photo: Getty) Speaking about Van de Ven, who has suffered numerous injury issues during his three seasons in north London, De Zerbi added: ‘Today he worked with us, with the group and he is going very well. ‘He suffered a problem during the pre-season of Australia, I don’t know if it was the flight, but not a big problem. ‘We have [Marcos] Senesi and we have Ben Davies in the right condition to play the game tomorrow.’ Also on the sidelines are Dejan Kulusevski, Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert as they continue to recovery from long-term injuries. After Brentford, Tottenham face Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night before hosting Newcastle United in the Premier League on August 29.
