Chelsea placed Kone on their list of possible midfield targets as Enzo Fernandez closed in on a move to Manchester City. Kone attracted interest from Premier League clubs after back-to-back impressive seasons in Italy and did his reputation no harm during the World Cup for France. It was reported on transfer deadline day that Chelsea were set to sign Kone, but the deal fell through and he remained at Serie A side Roma. Chelsea also failed in a bid to sign Lamine Camara from Monaco but Fernandez was still allowed to join Man City in a deal worth £125m. Foot Mercato say Alonso, keen to bolster his midfield options ahead of Fernandez’s departure, consulted his former Real Madrid player Mbappe about his France teammate Kone. Mbappe gave Kone a glowing review and soon after Chelsea agreed a deal worth 70m euros (£60m), which was more than his expected asking price. Malick Fofana's chaotic move to Sunderland was "a really difficult story to cover", says BBC Senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel. The Black Cats eventually beat Crystal Palace to the signing of the 21-year-old forward from Lyon in a deal worth £30m, after previous interest from Arsenal. "It was really a dramatic day and definitely one of the narratives of Deadline Day for sure," Mokbel told BBC Radio Newcastle.

The Belgium international emerged as a target late in the window as Arsenal considered strengthening their forward line following a number of high-profile snubs. Deals for Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior failed to materialise, with Christos Tzolis the only arrival to replace Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli. The Gunners had been holding out hope of a late deal for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, but the Argentine indicated he wasn’t keen on a Premier League return. However, Arsenal almost sprang into action on deadline day after they were offered the chance to sign Fofana as Lyon looked to raise funds after missing out on the Champions League. The 21-year-old has previously attracted interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, and was available for around £30million, a similar fee to that which Arsenal paid to bring Tzolis to the Emirates earlier in the summer. However, The Athletic reports that Arsenal were only willing to pursue a loan deal to avoid the possibility of breaching UEFA’s spending limits. Despite Arsenal’s decision, Fofana did ultimately end up in the English top-flight after a remarkable transfer tussle between Sunderland and Crystal Palace. The Black Cats struck a deal first for the winger before Palace looked to hijack the transfer after agreeing a similar deal with Lyon.
