Former Chelsea striker Carlton Cole (Picture: YouTube) Carlton Cole says Chelsea summer signing Morgan Rogers ‘messed up’ Arsenal’s transfer window by joining the Blues from Aston Villa. Rogers, 24, was heavily linked with Arsenal earlier in the summer and during England’s World Cup campaign. Mikel Arteta identified Rogers as one of his top targets to bolster a Gunners squad that won the Premier League and reached the Champions League final last season. Arsenal were believed to be leading the race to sign Rogers but Chelsea swooped in with an incredible £117m deal, making the West Brom academy graduate the most expensive British player in history. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. Ex-England striker Cole believes Rogers’ decision to join Chelsea ‘messed up’ Arsenal’s transfer window and says the Gunners still need to sign another attacking midfielder who can play on the left. Arteta is a known admirer of Bradley Barcola but Arsenal are currently behind Liverpool in that particular transfer race as they are reluctant to meet PSG’s £140m asking price. ‘Arsenal’s squad depth is something else,’ West Ham hero and former Chelsea star Cole said on the Dressing Room podcast. Chelsea summer signing Morgan Rogers (Picture: Getty) ‘Bruno Guimaraes has come in – he’s a brilliant player – and I still think they probably want one more signing before the window shuts. ‘I know they’re still trying to do a little bit of business. I think they need another left-sided forward, they’re obvious in the running to sign Barcola – they need someone like that. ‘I think it was supposed to Morgan Rogers, he was supposed to go there, but he opted for Chelsea which messed up Arsenal because I think it was nearly done before Chelsea swooped in and he agreed to go there. Why Morgan Rogers chose Chelsea ‘I’m joining the biggest club in London,’ Rogers said at his Chelsea unveiling. ‘The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward, it is something that I want to be a part of and I think it was just perfect for me. ‘I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.’ https://www.instagram.com/p/DbFxKCfsDDX/?hl=en ‘I’ve heard that Barcola would prefer to go to Arsenal than Liverpool but Arsenal won’t pay the fee that’s required for him. Liverpool would still be a great place for him to flourish.’ While Cole believes Arsenal could do with securing one more major signing before the transfer deadline, he does expect the Gunners to retain their Premier League crown. Arteta’s side won the title by seven points last season and secured a statement 3-0 win over Manchester City in Sunday’s Community Shield. Mikel Arteta missed out on the England star (Picture: Getty) ‘I’m going to go with Arsenal to win the league ahead of Chelsea and Man City,’ Cole said when asked for his Premier League title prediction. ‘Arsenal have the best squad and if they get Victor Osimhen in as well they’re going to be flying. He will be up there for the Golden Boot if he goes to Arsenal. ‘But I think they’re still alright with what they’ve got at the moment. They just need to sort out that left-hand side. ‘Chelsea are an interesting one because they’ve got no European games, they haven’t got the Saturday-Tuesday fixture pill-up. ‘Xabi Alonso at the helm as well, he knows how to win games, he proved that at Bayer Leverkusen. ‘I just think that squad is very, very strong considering that don’t need to worry about European games. ‘I’ve put Man City third, I think they will find it tough without Pep Guardiola and Rodri, they’re going to find it hard.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. Manchester United boss Michael Carrick (Picture: Getty) Manchester United have made an approach to sign Spain World Cup winner Gavi after Barcelona signed Rodri from Manchester City. Michael Carrick remains keen to bolster his midfield options before the summer transfer window closes in less than two weeks time. United signed Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea earlier in the summer but are open to a third midfield signing following Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s long-term injury. Manchester United were linked with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes before they both moves to Tottenham and also missed out on the likes of Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. According to the Daily Mirror, Old Trafford bosses have made an ambitious approach to sign Gavi after Barcelona’s impressive deal for fellow World Cup winner Rodri. Rodri, who won four Premier League titles and the Ballon d’Or during his spell at Man City, looked set to join Real Madrid with Jose Mourinho keen to welcome him to the Bernabeu. But Barcelona beat their La Liga rivals to a stunning deal, spending a relatively modest fee of £65m to sign one of the most influential players in the world. Barcelona star and World Cup winner Gavi (Picture: Getty) Manchester United targeted Gavi after Rodri’s move back to Spain but the 22-year-old immediately rejected their advances as he wants to stay at Barca. Gavi came through Barcelona’s academy before breaking into the first-team in 2021 and has since made over 150 appearances for the current La Liga champions. Carrick is believed to be a huge admirer of Gavi, a member of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad this summer, but will have to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements. New Barcelona signing Rodri (Picture: Getty) Reports in Spain recently suggested Barcelona could be receptive to the idea of selling Rodri but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano dismissed this possibility. ‘Gavi is not leaving Barcelona, absolutely impossible,’ he said. ‘Barca are more than happy with Gavi. ‘I would not be surprised if in the next months, Gavi and Barca start discussing a new contract. It’s not something imminent, so I don’t want to throw things that are not happening today, tomorrow, or in a few days. Gavi helped Spain win the World Cup (Picture: Getty) ‘But in the next months, I would not be surprised if you see a conversation between Gavi, and Barca over a new contract. ‘Gavi’s super happy with Barca. Rodri joining Barca is only good news for Gavi. Gavi and Rodri have an excellent relationship. ‘It doesn’t mean that Rodri is going to Barca so Gavi wants to go, it’s not true at all, and Gavi’s staying.’ https://www.instagram.com/p/DcMubA4uV7I/?hl=en While Manchester United’s move for Gavi was rebuffed, they are making progress on a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. Baleba was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer and Manchester United have offered Brighton a deal worth £65m this week. After leaving Manchester City to join Barcelona, Rodri said: ‘I’m very happy to have arrived. The last few days have been intense, but I’m glad everything has been sorted out. Man Utd are working on a deal for Carlos Baleba (Picture: Getty) ‘Of course, playing for FC Barcelona is a dream. I can’t wait to be with my team-mates, many of whom I already know from the national team. It’s time to get to work and give my very best.’ In a message to Manchester City posted on the club’s official website, Rodri added: ‘Dear City fans, I found that saying goodbye is one of the most difficult things in life but I am going to try. ‘It’s hard to find the words to express how much gratitude, love and support me and my family have experienced all these years. Ezri Konsa is set to depart Aston Villa for Arsenal (Photo: Getty) Aston Villa have reportedly entered the race for a Chelsea star as they look to replace Ezri Konsa ahead of his transfer to Arsenal. Two days before the start of new Premier League season, it was reported that the Gunners had struck a deal to sign the England international for an initial £51million. Konsa, a centre-back also capable of playing on the right, had emerged as Mikel Arteta’s top defensive target in light of injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. While a boost for Arsenal, it is yet another massive transfer blow for Villa who have seen the core of their team ripped apart this summer, with Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne departing. Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. It could yet get worse for Unai Emery, with Emiliano Martinez almost certain to leave, while Ollie Watkins is keen on a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. For now, Villa’s focus is on replacing Konsa and, according to Sky Sports, they are interested in Tosin Adarabioyo, who is surplus to requirements at Chelsea. Tosin joined the Blues in 2024, moving across west London from Fulham on a free transfer, but has failed to establish himself in the first-team, making just 16 appearances in the Premier League last season. Tosin Adarabioyo is no longer wanted at Stamford Bridge (Photo: Getty) While he has featured in pre-season under Xabi Alonso, he was left out of the squad entirely for the final friendly against Real Sociedad last week, a clear indication he is not wanted at Stamford Bridge. The 28-year-old has been the subject of interest from Benfica, now managed by his former Fulham boss Marco Silva, but reports suggest he is not keen on the move. Marseille and Sevilla are also interested in the Englishman, and the French club have already made an approach for the Manchester City academy graduate. Tosin won the Club World Cup and Conference League with Chelsea (Photo: Getty) It is not known how much Chelsea would want for Tosin, who has two years left on his contract. He is not the only centre-back the Blues are trying to offload before deadline day, with Mamadou Sarr, Aarón Anselmino and Axel Disasi, who was previously loaned to Villa Park, on the transfer list. They have tracked Konsa throughout the summer and have made a breakthrough in the negotiations.Mikel Arteta hopes Konsa, whose Villa contract has two years to run, can make light of Saliba’s absence in central defence. Coventry boss Frank Lampard has been speaking to the media before Friday's opening Premier League game against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium (kick-off 20:00 BST). Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni are "in contention" for the season opener but striker Haji Wright could be sidelined for "up to 12 weeks" with a quad muscle injury. Lampard said the season "couldn't start at a harder place" but Coventry will go to Arsenal "with belief" and will carry that throughout the campaign.
Sesko hoping to be fit to lead United’s attack this season (Picture: Getty) Michael Carrick did what was asked of him in getting Manchester United back into the Champions League last season. The job is now to take the next step. United had among the lightest schedules in the Premier League last season with no European football on offer and did what was largely expected of them in securing third place. A rebuild in midfield began with Casemiro departing and after missing out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arrived. Carlos Baleba could join them but should that deal go through at Old Trafford, he will do so with an injury that will sideline him until September. There were familiar injury problems for certain players last season with Matthijs de Ligt and Benjamin Sesko not involved in pre-season ahead of their league opener against Hull City on Saturday. So who is ready for the battle ahead? Exclusive Premier League previews Get ahead of the start of the season with our weekly football newsletter. Sign up now for free. Benjamin Sesko’s troublesome shin problem Following his £74million arrival from RB Leipzig last summer, Sesko finished his maiden campaign in Manchester with a respectable haul of 12 goals – the last of which coming in the 2-1 win over Liverpool that saw United tighten their grip on third spot. The Slovenia international took a nasty tumble down the infamous Old Trafford slope after a shove from Ibrahima Konate and did not feature for the rest of the season. While there was no suggestion it was a serious issue at the time, Sesko has not played since, missing every one of United’s pre-season matches. Sesko took a nasty tumble down the Old Trafford pitch (Picture: Getty) Sesko travelled with the squad to Dublin for the friendly game against Leeds, training with the squad since. But with no minutes under his belt, it remains to be seen what role he will have to play in the opening weeks of the new season. Stephen Smith, CEO and founder of Kitman Labs which specialises in injury welfare and performance analytics, explains shin problems can be challenging at the best of times. One concern at the forefront of United’s mind will be the risk of recurrence which was likely to have been a factor in his lack of pre-season involvement. ‘Things like bone stress reaction or irritation of the outside of the bone are generally painful and slow to heal,’ Smith told Metro. ‘Once he aggravated that [against Liverpool], the healing clock reset. ‘Recurrence risk for injuries like that is very real. Bone stress injuries that aren’t given enough time in recovery… it is well documented that they have the tendency to re-present and re-present more seriously as stress fractures. So the schedule with him is cautious.’ Sesko has missed the entire pre-season (Picture: CameraSport via Getty Images) It presents another dilemma. Match fitness and match sharpness are two very different things and with no minutes under his belt, when will Carrick consider him ready to start a game? ‘Returning just before the season opens with no preseason matches is not ideal but it is manageable if he has been doing significant conditioning work in the background and the bone has healed rather than just being symptom free,’ Smith said. ‘The summer is a double-edged sword. He needs the rest to recover but they also need to progressively load things to be ready for the season. So the shin can be healed but you need to be fit enough to cope with the demands of the game to ensure something else doesn’t happen. It is a balance the must manage.’ When will we see Matthijs de Ligt again? De Ligt was ever-present in United’s starting XI before he sat out of the win over Crystal Palace last November. ‘For Matta, it is a small thing,’ Ruben Amorim optimistically predicted. ‘I expect to have Matthijs [back] next game.’ The Netherlands international has not played since with radio silence over his fitness for much of the campaign.
