Obviously, Matthias Jaissle has seen something in the German that I haven't because Thiaw was the captain in the new head coach's first game in charge for the friendly with Valencia. Scholes has never been blown away by Guimaraes but insists he could ‘make Arsenal a better football team’ as they attempt to retain the Premier League trophy. We wanted to change our life, but not just for the city, we wanted to change everything. We spoke with two clubs. ‘I understood after 10, 15 minutes that Tottenham would be my next team.’ Spurs finished just two points above the relegation zone last season and kick-start their 2026-27 Premier League campaign against Brentford. One big signing missed and one through the doors - it's been a mixed transfer window for Arsenal. The Gunners were unsuccessful in what turned out to be a very public pursuit of Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr but did manage to bring in fellow Brazilian and Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes for £75m. The signing of Guimaraes is another of the "win now" signings like Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres last summer as he immediately raises the level and competition of the Arsenal squad.

Lewis-Skelly broke out of Arsenal’s academy ranks to establish himself as a genuine first-team star two years ago, making 23 top-flight appearances across an outstanding debut season with his boyhood team. And while Lewis-Skelly got his hands on the Premier League trophy at the end of the club’s title-winning season last term, it proved a much trickier campaign for the 19-year-old from a personal perspective. The versatile teenager, a product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, fell out of favour as Riccardo Calafiori nailed down his spot at Mikel Arteta’s first-choice left-back with a series of excellent performances. At 28-years-old, Harvey Barnes is a rare profile within the Newcastle United squad. The winger will be among the first names on the team-sheet, his new deal should give some security that he'll be at St. James' Park for a few years to come and he has plenty of experience under his belt. It wouldn't be a complete surprise if he were team captain with some of the options for club captain not likely to start as often as the former Leicester City man.
